I'm looking for a headset that will work with the M7316e telephone. Customer likes the Plantronics H101N Encore, but I can't find anywhere that says it is compatible with this type phone, or whether or not it requires an amplifier. Has anyone had experience setting up a headset with this phone?

Plantronics used to have a compatibility chart on their site. Did you check there?

If I remember correctly 7316e's have an amplified headset port on their base, same connector as a handset cord. So long as the plug fits should work since its self amplified.

Really, you called me because your phones are out and I can't see anything in your building because the power has been out all day.

I believe the Plantronics earpieces or Nortel end in an "N" and are meant to use the built in volume control of even the older "M" series sets.

You could check with Graybar or other suppliers.

The Nortel headset jack has a different electrical configuration from a standard handset jack, >IF< I remember correctly. That was the purpose of the 'N' on the headset part number. And don't forget to program the speakerphone button. That's what turns the headset on and off!

John, I believe the "N" was to mean that it has a "Noise Canceling" microphone.

Well then, I stand corrected. (ALL RIGHT! I sit corrected:)) But there is/was a special adapter cord for the Nortel headset jack. We (as in I) used to make them up by the dozen by buying 3 foot headset extension cords and 'gittin busy'. Made them up during slack time and cut our 'slack time' losses. Heck, I even connectorized left over chunks of 25 pair. And made up 6P4C M-M cords 5 feet long for cabling out systems that used them, or put 12 6C4Ps on a 25 pair for the same purpose. When you have guys standing around 'waiting for the cut', or whatever, you may not break even on the slack time, but you lose less!
