I have a problem with my nortel i2002 telephones connected to a nortel bcm 3.7. The phones are connected via a vpn about one quarter mile down the road from the bcm. About 2 weeks ago, the users came in and found no dial tone. they could get calls with no problem.
I went to site and tested. Indeed i would get no dial tone, but i was still able to call out and complete the call. I noticed that if i go off hook and have no dial tone that if i press a digit and then hang up, go back off hook i will then have dial tone and can complete a call with no problem. Also, once i have this dial tone i will not have the problem again unless the phone sits idle for a 5 or 10 minutes. also, if i reboot the phone i can get dial tone on the first try but then the dial tone is eventually gone and i can press the digit as mention above and the dial tone will reappear.

this is a strange one. any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have recently run into the same problem as you described. We were running all the phones from an off-site location through a Cisco VPN and decided to switch them off the VPN (to reduce latency and unclog the VPN for data throughput) to a dedicated IP number so they connected directly to the BCM (3.7) over the Internet. Ever since we have had intermittent dial tone issues. The phones work fine but there is no dial tone.

Were you ever able to get to the bottom of your issue? If so, can you share your solution?
