does anyone know if there is a specific rule or if this is addressed specifically in the portability act;
If you port a number the new provider is supposed to contact the old one and get the number. My understanding is that once the new provider does this it is also a notice to the old provider to term service.
I have a customer who switched, ported the number and the old provider still billed him for last month saying that it doesn't matter that the customer ported the number, they didn't receive a cancellation from the customer.

Corwyn, Just went through a similar situation. Had my Verizon cell service through a reseller (former client). Switched to Nextel, requested number port. Nextel called me back to tell me the carrier wouldn't release the number for port until I talked to them. I thought this was for authorization, but nooooo...they wouldn't release the number until my account was paid in full. This was Monday of this week (the 5th). I pointed out to the girl that they don't print their invoices until the 10th to 12th. She had a problem understanding this. Then, when I asked why they wanted to charge me $25.00 per line (2 lines) as a porting fee, she said "That's just one of the fees we charge to keep you here." They're also making me pay for the month of March.
When I get some free time I'd like to check into the provisions of the portability act to see just what can be charged.
