I want to be able to return calls using the caller id callback function, but I have things set up so that I need to dial account and verification codes to grab an outside line.

No problem, I thought...I just need to use caller id modification so that caller ids are stored with the account and verification codes. But caller id modification only allows you to insert 4 digits and the account and verification codes are longer than 4 digits.

Again no problem, I thought...I assigned the account and verification codes to a 'quick dial' (I used **5 as the quick dial) and then I set caller id modification to dial **5 before dialing the caller id.

Well, that doesn't work and I can't figure out why. When I manually dial the quick dial number (**5) it works fine to grab an unrestricted outside line. And I can see that the number in the caller id log is properly modified with **5 at the beginning. But when I bring up a caller id number and lift up the handset it tells me the line is 'restricted' as though it is not dialing **5 at the beginning.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Maybe I can make this a bit clearer:

I have **5 set up as a quick dial to dial my account access code, verification code and verification pin for getting an outside line.

So let's say as an example that a caller has a number 2125551212. When I dial **512125551212 and then go off hook, that works fine. And when I look at the caller id for that caller as it appears in the incoming log it properly shows as **512125551212 (since I am using caller id modification). But when I go to caller id, see that listing and then go offhook I get a message telling me the line is restricted. What am I doing wrong??

i think when you hit the call button it is
doing a redial on the "line" and I don't think
the panasonic sees your leading **5 as anything
more than the wrong dtmf digits

Ah, that's probably right (makes sense and is what I was guessing anyway), but there must be a way around this, isn't there?? If not, this is a pretty big problem for my setup.

Nothing is perfect.
Try Walking ext. You may be able to set up on a button, press button, enter ext (number that has no restrictions) and PIN.
ext is now unlocked. Cancel Walking Ext when done.
Or do what you were doing manually.

I guess a walking extension would work but it's a pretty awkward solution. I'm more intrigued with your suggestion that I can do what I was doing manually. What does that mean? If I click **5 (my quickdial which grabs an unlocked outside line) I can no longer view the call log. Is there a trick that will allow me to view the call log and dial from it after I already am off hook on an unrestricted line?

I hate to bump my own post but it's been a while and I keep thinking there must be a solution out there for a problem I would imagine would be a common one for a lot of people.

Brokeda, what did you mean when you suggesteed I could do what I was doing manually? Do you just mean that I could press the keys needed to grab an outside line and then manually enter the telephone number that was shown by the caller id log (which I would need to remember or write down since the caller id log disappears when you go off hook)? Or did you have something else in mind that might allow me to manually grab an outside line and then somehow access the caller id log (somehow make it so it available when I am offhoook rather than disappearing)?

Ok, I've now given up on doing this the way I was originally hoping to. But is there any way to do it manually? Is there a way to manually grab an outside line and once I've got it, view and use the caller id log?

Thanks for letting me know.

The fallback - your idea of using walking extensions - won't work for me unless I can set things up so that the extensions revert to their regular status after a specified time without the user needing to log out. Any chance I can make that work?
