I could not get the maintenance console to load. It would prompt me for the initial password, then....nothing. After hours of painful troubleshooting I isolated the problem to a process called 'keyhook.exe'. It's the Acer hotkey application preloaded on my XP laptop. I simply end the process & no more problems.
