I have a customer with an EMM 336. The second cabinet appears to be down. None of the extensions that are in that cabinet work. The cabinet indicates power is present. Not really sure where to start since I don't work on these very much at all. Any help would be appreciated. Im trying to figure out what I need to get the customer back up and running.

The power supplies for this system are notorious for failing, even with the lights on. You may have to try swapping the two temporarily just to see if the upper one is good or not. It's a pain to get them out, but it's your best bet.
You may also want to double-check the ribbon cables that connect the cabinets together on the right side.
Do you know if it's possible that someone used the "out of service" command in programming to disable the second shelf? Lastly, is there a modem card or external modem connected to the system? That card is labeled "RMT" on the ejector tab and can be in just about any slot in the system.
I had a 336 that I was consoled into , recieved a power surge while i was programming, first signof trouble was all the relays clicking, took both shelves out of service and blew the serial port on my laptop, always have a spare laptop with me now that at least has procomm on it.
if you take out the power supply for the cabinet that doesn't work and open it up, there are a couple of those small 1/2 inch glass fuses that use to blow. i use to get them at radio shack. if you find a bad fuse that still blows after replacing it (plug in the power supply, with the new fuse, without any other cards pluged into the cabinet)then you probably have a bad power supply.
Ed is correct, "The power supplies for this system are notorious for failing". Tomorrow i have to shut down a 336 to replace a faulty card and i allready told the customer that it's not my fault if the system does not come back up.
i have a local dealer that might have some spare power supplies and cards for the 336 that he wants to sell. PM me if you need his number.

Cards can be hot swapped- They will initially be "OOS" but IIRC, they will come in service after a few minutes.
Back Up? I've never known anyone to be able to back up (and then restore) the database. You're a better man than I, SNC if you've been succesfull.
I used to stock the PS, but have had so much problems with them lately(Caps dry out and they pop), I tend to try to move people into a D500. The 500 is a much better performing system and at this point, only 2 years out of date instead of 12

Wow, I did backup and restore on them many, many times with no problems at all. It sounds like I have been getting lucky. We did (do) monthly backups on the remaining systems we have out there.
