i'll bet you you can get an advanced replacement but you'll have to use the last known backup when you get the new one avd it will have to be the same rev ksu that info can be retieved from program 116....

As Balley mentioned above, make sure that all the pins on th eRS-232 cable are connected. I have one site here where we had only one pair of wires between the KSU and the PC which was used for call logging, periodically it would stop working and the fix was to plug a laptop into the RS232 port and p0ower cycle the KSU(*all wires pinned out)This would wake up the port and all was good again (crude but effective)

1 other possibility, I could not connect to a 1232 back from p'sonic repair until, out of desperation, I opened up the cabinet and discovered that the 232 cable was not connected to the cpu! Not sure if that is valid for an 816, but worth a look. I don't have 1 around, or I'd look myself.  John C. (Not Garand)
