Our company installs POS systems for a major fast food resturant. We have been given an opportunity to install in another state. Problem is we don't have licence. We are having to sub this work. This 'problem' increases the install time and reduces our bottom line $$.

We, I , have to show some of the subs how to do a job worth leaving a customer. We give quality work, and having to redo a subs work is frustrating.

Are there exteptions to this rule?

What license are you talking about and what state? I can guess that it's a low voltage license that allows you to install the wiring but I have no idea what state.

Let me know and I will get you the information.

General low voltage license for Georgia. The state requiring the license is Florida.

Is that a requirement for that local county/city/municipality?

The state of florida doesn't require a low-voltage license for telephone or data work. The state statue is 489.503 section 14a and 14b.

I would call the county and city you are going to do the work into and ask if they have licensing requirements for Low-Voltage Telephone and Data and what their requirements are. You might be able to just sit for the test and then get your own license.

I beleive this is a requirement of the region manager of the stores.
Are you saying that a 'local' test can be taken to provide a 'local' license. I called Georgia License Board and was informed that a one year apprenticeship must be completed under a license holder. This apprenticeship would present many problems. Not to mention, we have been doing this work since 1998.

Statue 489.511 contains the requirements in order to sit for the licensing test and obtain a license. This is for all trades.

Florida Statue 489.511

If you skip to the bottom to section 6 you will see that your valid licensing in georgia qualifies you to sit for the licensing exam in florida.

There is a chance but I cant imagine that the local city/county/etc have different requirements in order to sit for the test.

The real question is what kind of license are you required to have? You will need to find out from your local city/county/etc. The state of florida only issues a low-voltage license for alarm/security.

I think there is a lot of confusion both on your part as well the manager.

As you have been told there is no state license to do the type of work you will be doing in Florida.

If there is no license there is no license to be had. I would inform the regional manager of this as it doesn't look like he is very informed.

Question comes to mind about the subs you have been using. Who told you that you couldn't do the work yourself and what qualifies these subs? They wouldn't be electrical contractors would they?

This smacks of IBEW BS.

Well the state of florida doesn't issue a license for low-voltage voice/data/catv.

That doesn't mean that the county you are doing the work in does not require licensing. Or the City for that matter.

He still needs to check with the county and city to see if they require seperate licensing or if they pass authority to the state.

It does smell like a rather large pool of disinformation tho. Either the old wiring contractor telling the manager this or an electrician.

If you are subbing your work and you have to train them on how to do it then you are using the wrong subs to begin with.

I not sure of the circumstances of the region managers decision to require license in Florida, other than he 'got burnt' with the previous installer. That is why we got the business. Now he requires persons with license and other requirements.

The 'sub-par' subs are hired by the local manager of the store. We give them the option to sub out this work because they have 'supposing' local knowledge.
