That doesn't mean that the county you are doing the work in does not require licensing. Or the City for that matter.

I just read the email he sent me. In it he mentions "We called the licence board and they say no [exceptions]".

This whole thing is begining to sound very familiar. I don't know where but somebody had the exact same problem once before. Someplace in Florida, license board said they had to be licensed, we couldn't confirm any requirement for licensing. That's as far as the discussion went.

Ok, we already established that there is NO statewide licensing for low voltage other than alarms. My question then is what county in Florida is this job? Lets check that out.

I think one or some of the following is happening:

1) You are not asking the right questions or describing your work properly to the licensing board. (I'm assuming here that nothing you do involves line voltage, only data and telephone communications wiring and other low voltage wiring that is covered by NEC Articles 725 and 800 on, correct?)

2) The person you talked to at the licensing board doesn't know what you are talking about.

3) There really is a local requirement for low voltage licensing.

So where is this so we can check it out on the local level.

Some counties in south Fl require a license. I only know of a couple though. There are a few city's that require a license but I don't know for sure where you need to work. I do know that the building inspectors are getting to be a real pain in the a@@@. I had to go back to Oviedo and lift one cable off the ceiling grid on a job a sub did for me down there. I don't know of any city's/county's in NE Fl that require a license.

The question comes to mind--just WHO would be testing for this license if it is not the state??? I can't believe that local govenments would go to the epense of doing this. And would the license ONLY be good in that county?? Maybe a PERMIT is being confused with a LICENSE?

"The question comes to mind--just WHO would be testing for this license if it is not the state???"

ANSWER: NY State does not have a low voltage license requirement, but Suffolk County, NY, does.

"I can't believe that local govenments would go to the expense of doing this."

ANSWER: Believe it.

"And would the license ONLY be good in that county??"

ANSWER: Yes.

I can't believe that local govenments would go to the expense of doing this.

It's actually a revenue producer, that's the main reason they do it. The testing may cost them a few dollars but the steady stream of permit fees and license renewal fees from thousands of contractors are where they make money. It's just another form of taxation.
