d1232 about 20 extensions.
Some of the phones have been "flickering" every day or two, the display goes in and out rapidly, you have to unplug and re plug in the phone to fix it. It's unusable when the problem is happening.
Switched phones, put on new linecords, put on new jack, used spare pairs, changed extension numbers etc... Finally swapped the cabinet (re-using their 8-port extension card and CID card) and the problem is still happening.
Any ideas? Power issue?

Is the system using analog phones, digital ones, or a mix? A short on the data pair of an analog extension (no matter how weak) will knock eight stations out. This may not be obvious since the affecting station may not be the one that has reported problems.
I'd put an Ohmmeter on the second pair of any connected analog (70XX, 77XX) series phones with the phones connected, but disconnected from the TD. More than likely, you will find one that has a slightly different reading than the others. That one will likely be your culprit.
Also, look for any wall phone jacks that are mounted on a metal box or ring. The placement of the second pair terminals on many brands of wall phone jacks puts them close-enough to the edges of the box/ring to cause an occasional short.

also since you used the original 8 ext card, you cant rule out the power regulator on the card.
is it happening on all phones or just some?

They have all digital phones besides 2 7896's, the rest are 72xx and one 74xx. It's happening on four that I know of. The problem was at first happening to x105, 107. I changed those exts to be 113 & 124 and it's still happening. They do have a few wallmounted phones.
I would have liked to replace the 8 ext card but didnt have one in stock.

Check your D1232 power supply, I've seen some units go erratic from a bad power supply. In the worst case back up your system and do a hard reset. A bad extension card usually shows dead extension port or whole system lock out.

Could it be that they have some new single line device, such as a credit card reader, that might have an "a lead" control on the second pair that throws a short on the system when the device goes off hook?

This is a residence, so no credit card machines, maybe I should disconnect all the XDP pairs since they aren't using any except for the two 7896's.

if the problem was on ext 105/107 and you moved it to 113/124 and you still have a problem with those phones, it has to be the cables/socket

Changed the jacks and used spare pairs on those two exts, still happened. The last thing I did before I left a few days ago was unplug the system from the battery backup and plug it directly into the wall. Now just waiting to here if it happens again.

If it is still on the same 2,3 or 4 pair cable, it still could be the cable cut in the casing some where or chewed by mice
