if thats the case then what is the key system doing on this site? Is caller id getting handed of to the unit?

It's a bit of a long story. Once upon a time this residence had a system. Old panasonic 616. People moved, took phones, left behind KSU and doorphone. New people wanted to know how to use doorphone with their standard phones (cordless mostly) . They don't know KSU even exists. I figured OK, they have a lot of 2 line phones but only 1 CO line. I can put the KSU on line 2 for the sole purpose of taking calls from the doorphone. Genius, right? The way their handing out Nobel prizes I think I'm in line!

Back in the day, I had a 123211-D, front and back doorphones at my shop, and an OPX to my apartment about 2 miles away. It worked fine. You pressed the button, it rang my OPX and I answered. Since I didn't use the door opener option, I don't know if I could hang up and dial 551/552 to let them in or not, but everything else was just fine.

you could throw in a viking door controller and
door box has way better audio and throw the 616 in the dumpster...
