Well I hate this but my old IBM thinkpad with windows 95 is just about to give u the ghost. I bought a used gateway with windows 2000 but it has a bad serial port. I need something NEW I use pc plus for Executone IDS products and pc plus for windows i guess will work with windows xp i also need to talk to stratagy voicemail and Toshiba equipment, Vodavi STS voicemail flash and HD I have a few TalkPath voicemails and will need to work with Avaya IP office. I understand there are some good usb to serial adaptors and some bad ones too. Any advice would be nice. I am one of those older techs that started with dos and really hate to change, i know time marches on and i guess i will have to also.
thanks

You may be somewhat hard pressed to find a machine still running Windows Xp - if you are purchasing new you may need to get a Vista machine.

If you are looking at buying used, I would reccomend staying with IBM. They are the roughest and toughest consumer/small business grade machines on the market. Heck, I would recommend IBM/Lenovo over any other brand.

That being said, the Toshiba Tecra line still has a USB port and has been reasonably reliable for me.

Here is a link to an old conversation here covering the USB>Serial conversion: https://www.sundance-communications.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=000111;p=1

You can also try ebay. I love my Toshiba, and have always had good luck with them, not so much with Dell, every now and then I think about putting my work Dell laptop in the microwave...

Altho this may sound like a commercial, we DO NOT sell P'sonic Tough Books even tho we sell P'sonic TDA. But we buy used ones thru E-bay because the name is ACCURATE! You should be able to find 'em with XP pro reasonably priced, with a warranty of some sort. Your main concern will be the battery, cause it is EXPENSIVE! John C. (Not Garand)
