Does anybody have any experience with "remote boot" devices?? They are like power strips that can be remotely shut off and on (via IP connection, I guess). It could be configured to shut off power to one outlet, but keep the others up and running.

It would allow you to remotely re-boot a router for instance.

Any idea on costs???

I know about wake on lan for network cards, and you can also remotely install Windows through it.

Price depends on features, but I think the models I bought were about $700 each. That's basic IP access to remotely turn on and off each outlet. There are other companies making similar products, but these guys have been doing it the longest I think, and they are very well known.

There were some modem versions of these things a few years back. Before the prevalence of IP devices we used to use them occasionally.

You dialed into the modem line (with remote access being the main idea)and if the system was hosed up, you could reboot the PC. Some of them offered a contact closure that could be used for a variety of things.

You needed a dial tone line for it, but they were a whole lot less then $700 (maybe $100).

I did some searching and found that www.synaccess-net.com has some small 2 outlet IP ones. The ones at Server Tech look pretty good, too.

I think the dial-up ones are maybe more what I'm used to---but I have been having such a bad time with dial-up connections lately(on modems)--I'm thinking of going all IP stuff from now on, if I can.

APC (the UPS company) also makes them..

We used to pick up the CD (carrier detect) lead from an external modem and send it and common to a SSR(solid state relay)to power up a computer for remote start and control operation.

When the calling system shut down, the CD went low and turned off the PC.

External modem? Hayes SmartModem 2400?

Wish things had remained simple like that...unfortunately today's operating systems and computers are very particular, they have to shut down/be rebooted in proper fashion. That is why today's remote popo devices have to control not just the power circuit (as the earliest generations did) but also the operating system's power functions - usually this means that you have to load some kind of software on the machines to be controlled. As long as you stick with widely used operating systems there should be no problem. If running anything exotic, I'd make sure the device can power off the system gracefully.
