I was wondering if anyone has tried moving the microphone that is behind the tiny hole in the front of the Toshiba phones to another location.

I'm on a pair of 3014s that sit on an angled platform about a foot off my desk and I would certainly like a better microphone.

They are not making an external mic for any of the 3000 series as they did the special DKT 2020 whatever it was.

I assume someone has tried this before and either has a success or failure story they could relate.

Thanks, Bunnie

By moving it to another location, do you mean trying to jury-rig an external or alterring its placement within the phone?

We had a customer who had the angled down telephone holders for their desks and "Yes" they did block the Mic opening. Our solution was replace the angle down holders that they loved and wouldn't do without with new plexiglass ones that we used a Zip-It tool to open the area by the Mic up. We made the opening 1/2 inch tall by 2 inch wide...worked fine, except for the people who place Post-it notes over that area anyway.
Hope that helps.

I was talking about moving the microphone outside the phone and perhaps under the shelf to avoid feedback.

With out taking a drill to the 3014 case I was wondering if you got more volume into the mic. by enlarging the microphone hole.

People are saying that I don't have much volume and I talk plenty loud for sure.

Paul, you fix phones, if I added an extra mic taken from another phone, would that throw off the impedence or whatever and make it worse?

I would die without doing this but I would like to have an improved speakerphone or just go back to headsets which I would prefer not doing.

A larger hole might actually be your best bet.
However, as long as you are comfortable with a soldering iron /desoldering iron, why not try simply solderring leads onto the existing mic and placing it outside the phone (next to it perhaps)? It should only take a few minutes and, if it does not work, remove the leads and try a larger hole. I think that adding a second mic would really screw things up (two slightly out of phase input signals along the same path) but have never tried it. If it works, get out the drill and make a small hole for the wires and maybe a clip of some kind to hold the mic in place. Then sell your solution on E-By. Realize that if you have a half-duplex, this is going to cause more cut-offs on your incoming signal because the mic will be picking up a lot more background noise. You might need to put the mic inside a piece of foam rubber to keep it from picking up vibrations through the desk, etc...

Last, I have heard of people trying to find a better quality external mic that matches the signal input from the internal mic and wiring it in place instead of the internal mic, but I think it might take a lot of fiddling and trying different mics to get one that will work.

Thanks, I will give the old soldering iron a workout on a less expensive phone, maybe a 3010S. It certainly would be nice if these were full duplex, I can't see why that would be so expensive, other phones have them.

Try putting a jack on the phone and a plug on the mike. Less problems with it getting jerked out of the phone.

No matter how much you idiot-proof something, someone will build a better idiot.
