Rarer ?
, I believe it is
Ive seen a lot of the dial version but I don't recall ever seeing that particular phone in dial blank
more desirable ?
hard to say
some here are in to the collectible end far more than I so maybe they will chime in .
personally I prefer the look of the dial version .

LoL The first thing that came to my mind was: An ugly little rascal is what it is! That one looks like it was in the sun for an extended amount of time or in a smokey environment if you notice the tan lines.
Anyway, I've never ran across one in my career.

The space savers are cool little phones, often used at department store sales counters. The dial versions allowd you to turn and swivel the dial. Earlier all metal versions contained only a hookswitch and dial, needing a subset to house the induction coil and ringer, just like a candle stick or early cradle phone. Even those with internal networks needed an external ringer box if you wanted them to ring. Oh, and AE also make a 6-button 1A2 keystrip adjunct that could mount next to the space saver.

Could be a phone that worked based on PLAR (Private Line Automatic Ringdown) and didn't require a dialpad. Pick up the phone and it automatically rings down to the other side of the circuit.

I agree with Touch Tone.
They definitely had versions, such as this, that was used primarily in businesses.
If these phones were wired behind a PABX, they could be wired to hotline the attendant, or whoever, when the receiver was picked up. Otherwise they were used as intercoms to be answer only. The dial version was fairly common in business and residential settings in the sixties and seventies, I've only seen the non-dial version in business settings as I described.
Almost anyone that is able to answer this post is telling their age for sure (32 years wasting my life do this stuff)
