How must the CIX40 be equipped to provide unified messaging? Will the GVPH1A do it and if so, what licence or upgrade is needed?

THE CIX-40 would, if it was connected to a Stratagy MAS, ES, or some other voicemail system. The GVPH voicemail can not do unified messaging. It doesn't even have an ethernet port on it.

Is Stratagy MAS an external device and what connects and integrates it to the CIX40

Yes it is external and it connects via the GIPH card

Both are external PC based voicemail system, altho the Stratagy ES8 has been replaced by the microMAS -D, which you wouldn't use because the CIX40 only has max of 2 analog ports.
I haven't actually seen either hooked up to a CIX-40 before. The MAS, or the MicroMAS -H, are VoIP systems so it would hook up to, as mentioned, the GIPH in the CIX-40.
