The installer program for this eManager release specifically requires XP SP2 (Service Pack 2). If it sees SP3 installed, it will unsuccesfully terminate the installation.

Easy Way Out:
Install eManager 5 on XP SP2, then upgrade to SP3. It runs just fine, which makes me believe the install routines are shoddily written (no surprizes there).

Workaround (untill Toshiba comes up with a fix):

1. Start the installer normally, continue untill installation is terminated. Make sure that you DO NOT delete the temporary installation directory when you are given the choice. (The default would be C:\eManager510A07 etc)

2. Browse to the SQLExpress 2005 folder of the "temporary" installation directory. Install SQLExpress 2005 using the install batch file (extension .bat) provided. Do NOT use the SQLExpress setup program outright.

3. Browse to the eManager folder of the "temporary" installation directory. Run the "Setup" program in this directory, NOT the "Install eManager" program.

4. Restart the computer.

5. Make sure you run the UpgradeDb program from inside the (installed) UpgradeDb subdirectory of the installed eManager directory. (It should be C:\eManager\UpgradeDb if you left it at the default). There is also an UpgradeDb program inside the UpgradeDb subdirectory of the SQLExpress 2005 temporary installation folder. It should not be neccessary to run this program, but if you decide to run it, do it BEFORE running the same program in the C:\eManager\UpgradeDb directory.

Good luck. You should be in business.

I've had problems installing Network Manager on XP with SP3 as well. I guess Toshiba is behind the curve ball once again.

The emanager V510A14 was release and is said to be able to be installed on SP3, but Network EManager V510A18 (released 2 days earlier) can not be installed on SP3.

Kinda odd since the network version is supposed to replace regular emanager soon. I have SP3, but I might have istalled Netowrk EManager before the update.

I'm not surprized Network eManager A17 would not install, since it was released before XP SP3. But A18 should, since it came after. Mysterious happenings.
Thanx for the heads up on the eManager V5.10A14. Now I feel like a dunce for going through the motions of installing A07 on SP3.

Which Vista version are you running. If I can get it to run on Vista Basic, I will give my XP Pro laptop back to my wife. smile

I wouldn't do anything business-related on Vista Basic. There are three versions of Vista that should be used professionally:

1. Business Premium
2. Ultimate (=Business Premium + Media Center + Encryption)
3. Enterprize (=Ultimate minus certain Media Center features. This is sold only through Microsoft's Volume Licensing)

I would advise to upgrade from Basic ASAP, assuming you have the hardware.

I am do contracting work, my vista machine is would only be used for programming.

Another problem is that I don't want to have to pay over $200.00 bucks for an upgrade to basic

I would disagree with you for the purposes put forward in this thread. The only reason you'd need more than Vista Basic from a business perspective is if you need any of the following features:

  • Joining Domains
  • Using non-M$ network protocols (Netware, SNMP, etc)
  • Remote Desktop (aka Terminal Services)
  • Windows Web Server
  • Encrypted File System
  • IIS
  • Fax
  • Offline Files
  • Dual (physical) processor support

Don't believe the hype.
