First of all I want to thank Steve and Travis for answering the first questions. This is a big help. However, I posed the question we need wrong. It is the memory card that holds the memory if the phone system goes down,is that built in or external? And can it be replaced by itself. Thanks again so much.

The main processor holds the current programming. This is saved into memory by a battery on the same processor. There is a jumper next to the battery. If the jumper strap is in the off position, then the battery will not keep the programing in memeory when you lose power.
The SM or SD card inserted into the processor is for backup of the programing. This will be current up to the last time someone backed up the programming. If no backup has been made recently, then the backup may be old.
If there is no card, either SM for older systems or SD for newer systems, plugged into the processor card, then there is no backup.
If the system loses programing from internal memory because the onboard battery did not hold it, the system will automatically pull the backup from the external card. If there is no backuo there, then the system will load a defualt setting.
If you are losing programing when the power goes out, I wouldn't say it is definately the processor. Start by checking the battery jumper strap. The battery is also replaceable. If there is not a card installed, insert one and do a backup.
