Unified Messaging quit working a while back and I wasnt notified about it for some time and I do not use it. I'm not sure what changed but after reading here I figured how to run the VM Trace and was able to log the error. I'm fairly sure I see where the problem is, I'm just not sure where to change it. I'll post the log below. Domainnames and IP addresses have been changed.
System is a CIX/CTX 670 connected to a MAS and I use eManager to make changes to the settings.
00000004 1240856303 Notif-TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-As-SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-for-240/TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG/240 {CSMTPSendNewMsgApp::GetMXIPs Get MX Record for (domainname.com)}
Domainname.com is ours but no longer has an active SMTP server. I do not know where this setting is modified at and I believe this is my problem.
00000004 1240856303 Notif-TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-As-SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-for-240/TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG/240 {getmxrr domainname.com, droplocalhost=0}
00000004 1240856303 Notif-TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-As-SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-for-240/TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG/240 {;;res_querydomain domainname.com, <Nil>, 1, 15}
00000004 1240856303 Notif-TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-As-SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-for-240/TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG/240 {;;res_query domainname.com, 1, 15}
00000004 1240856303 Notif-TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-As-SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-for-240/TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG/240 {;;res_mkquery 0, domainname.com, 1, 15}
00000004 1240856303 Notif-TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-As-SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-for-240/TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG/240 {;;Querying server # 1 address = 0.0.0.0}
Not sure where its getting above IP address from either
00000004 1240856303 Notif-TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-As-SMTPSEND_NEWMSG-for-240/TAIS.APPLICATION.SMTPSEND_NEWMSG/240 {res_send:connect dg [0.0.0.0].53: Unknown error 10049}
{CSMTPSendNewMsgApp::GetMXIPs Get MX Record for 172.xxx.xxx.xxx}
The IP address above is a local SMTP server that is enabled for relaying and I know works. This IP is set on the Unified Messaging tab under VM of my mailbox. I have changed this parameter before to allow users to use different SMTP servers but changing it now does not help.
Your thoughts and suggestions?

This is the order that the Stratagy uses to deliver a message.
1.If there is a SMTP Gateway server configured in system parameters (sys_smtpserver_gateway), connect to this server. (4.6 and higher). 2.If no Gateway Server defined, get the the mail servers (MX records) for the domain and attempt to connect to each mail server in order of MX preference. 3.If that does not work, try to connect directly to the domain host IP. 4.If all else fails, connect to the SMTP server defined in the UM tab.
It uses the setting in the UM tab LAST. The 2 in the middle can not be change. It will try to connect directly to the domain.com for the email address to which it is trying to send the message. If you want to have it use another server first, set the sys_smtpserver_gateway in system configuration.
It should eventually get to the setting in the UM tab if the other methods fail.

Thank you for explaining the sequence. I did not change anything, but somehow poking around worked. It IS sending from the server listed in the VM Parameters page.
Thanks for your help.
