During a call, we have started to hear in the conversation the ringing from another incoming call. And perhaps in a related development, people calling us say they can hear a very faint background hum during the conversation.

What are the likeliest causes?

I'm entirely willing to try that, but I looked it up and it appears to be a procedure for dealing with call-waiting tones. What I was describing is the basic incoming-call ring that is set to ring all the phones here. We hear that in the handset while we're on a call.

Yup, as p2ii said - REDIAL + VOL down button will turn off the ringing in the handset.

It is not referring to a typical "call-waiting", as you're probably thinking of, which relates to doing a "flash" to switch over to the call... that only deals with a single line that has call waiting turned on from the phone company.

Not sure if there was any resolution on this topic but if disabling the call waiting tones does not fix the issue it could just be wiring related.

Could just be the actual dial tone bleeding through on your lines. Are the lines consecutive? If you disconnect the line from the system and pick up dead air can you still hear the ringing in the background?

Marktech,

This is very common on Toshiba DK series systems... it was an easy feature for a customer to accidently turn on, so it's a 99% probability that's what's going on. That being said, IF that is not the problem, then there may be something with the wiring.

Steve, sorry for posting over you... must have been typing at the same time!

Thank you one and all, beginning with P2II. The "Call Waiting" switch did take care of it. And yes, there is a new staffer in the office, so some accidental fumbling with the keys probably accounts for it.
