Good point on the DSL. Also could be a fried filter with the storms.

I don't know if Panasonic still markets stand alone answering machines. AT&T and GE still do. If the loop current is on the low side, would that cause the answering machine to think that the calling party hung-up?
The DSL angle is a good one. Do you have DSL service?

Thanks for the suggestions. No, I do not have DSL. Yes, I did unplug all other devices and still had the problem. I will try the caller ID tonight and post results tomorrow.

Thanks for all the help,

Try with a phone cord that does not do a "rollover" from end to end - I have seen devices that won't work if Tip and Ring are reversed.

To follow up, I tried the caller ID on outgoing calls and our ID comes up fine.

Well so much for that idea. I think any other test would probably have to be done by someone with knowledge of testing POTS lines. Might try Tommy's suggestion.

Is the Network Interface (the device the separates the outside cable from the inside wiring) a box with a hinged door? It might be located outside near where the telephone cable enters the house.

If it is, can you plug the answering machine into the test jack located inside the demarc and see if the unit acts the same way?

(This is a real shot in the dark, but what the heck! smile )

Dexman - I found the network interface outside and took the cover off. There is no test jack inside; only 4 lugs with phone lines attached to them.
