It might be Dr. Scholl's gell filled cable. it makes the signla go faster because it is more comfortable.
Unless of course this does include outdoor work then it is highly recommended to use icky pick (i.e. NEC electrical code). Also don't forget the protector blocks. It sounds as though the CG is trying to zap the customer for money.
I would just e-mail this thread to the customer.
BTW, what type of loss is there during a rain storm or when seagulls or trucks go in front of the transmitter (assuming the CG installs the equipment)

Unless of course this does include outdoor work then it is highly recommended to use icky pick (i.e. NEC electrical code). That is not listed anywhere in the NEC. It was a standard that Western Electric developed in the 1960's that has since been adopted by all cable manufacturers. Where did you get that information, Bill? I might have to agree with the CG on this one. 450 feet of even icky-pic CAT5e or 6 is pushing one's luck from a reliability standpoint for a data circuit. Now, if it's just for a pots line, you could get away with just about any kind of cable.

Ed, if I read this right, he's not using this as a data cable, just to extend the POTS line/DSL, therefore he's not pushing his luck, just his client into bankrupcy.

I see nothing wrong with beating this CG into submission. Sometimes that is just what is required.

Yep, that's a good laugh. My phone and DSL service seems to work quite well at the end of a circa 24,000 ft. run of CAT-nothing cable from the C.O. I guess nobody told the electrons that it's impossible?
