Hey all,

Got a question for the guys in our group with electrical experience. I have been low voltage my entire career so don't know much about the painful stuff!! After this last hurricane (Gustav), tired of all the cords running across my floor. Want to put in something permanent. Been looking at the products from Connecticut Electric, Reliance etc.

These transfer switches are fairly pricey. I can afford them with no problem, but if something cheaper is around why not go that way? Only want to operate my 120v circuits. Got a 5500 watt generator with 30amp connect on it.

Any Ideas?

Thanks
Troy

Check with THESE people. They sell all of the gadgets that you'll need to retrofit your existing panel and provide an interlock kit to eliminate the need for a separate transfer switch.

I'm using their stuff here at my house and I have my electric range, microwave, water pump, sewage pump, sump pump, three refrigerators, one freezer and all of my 120 volt circuits running on a 5500 watt generator. Of course, we have to be conservative with loads, but it does just fine.

Ed, I expect you'll be getting Hanna shortly after I type this. Gone from here and the sun has been out for 2-3 hours now. That said, I probably shouldn't mention that in the 8 years I've lived here, I've had a total power outage of maybe 8 hours. And most of that time was not during 'weather'. Same was true in central KS. John C.
