I have a friend with a flex 616 and 5 sets. The system is dropping calls and ringing the phones erratically. It only seams to calm down after a power cycle but starts up again after a while. I have read of this same problem in other posts and was wondering if there is a known fix. I work for Avaya but don't know much about Vodavi. Any help would be great.

It could be a wiring problem. If there is a bad connection with one of the data pairs (second pair) going to one of the phones, it will cause problems.

I've also had a phone go bad and cause problems system wide.

Disconnect each phone at the MDF one at a time and see if the problem goes away.

The Vodavi analog phones have 2 capacitors in them that tend to go bad that can cause all kinds of flukey problems system wide. I would do as suggested above and remove the telephones one at a time and see if the problems continue.

You might also reseat the amphenol connector. Make sure its hasn't worked a bit loose on the top or bottom.

The first step is to check all your AMP connections, if they are not in all the way you will get the problem you are having, the second step is to go one by one and see if a phone is causing it.

Would an SLA have anything to do with these problems?

you said in your first post:
>>It only seams to calm down after a power cycle but starts up again after a while.

How long did you leave the power off?
I've always gone with at least 15 minuets...30 minuets is better yet.

If you just turned it off then back on, that will not do much most of the time.
It sounds like you have false data and a long power down will generally fix it. The false data comes from power spikes and bumps most of the time.

I had a similar problem in my Flex 616 system. 2 of my telephones had bad capacitors. The capacitors that go bad are the 220uf 35v connected between the transformer center taps.
My 2 Flex 616 KSUs supply 38v to the phones and this "overvoltage" is applied directly to the 35v capacitor. Has anyone else measured 38v between the data pairs and the voice pairs?

Tom,

Welcome to the board. Please refrain from digging up old posts and asking the same question over and over.
