I've got a client that just moved into a new building and wants to keep the Vodavi phone system that was left behind. It appears to be a Vodavi DVX Plus system with a VM unit.
I haven't figured out what the VM is yet since there doesn't seem to be any labels on it. All I can say is that it is a blue box, about 12 x 14 x 4. The ports are on the right-hand side, can't remember if it has 4 or 8.
I was able to connect to it via serial port and did a total reset of it, putting everything back to default values. Now the problem is that I'm not sure how to configure this thing to answer at night only and if the phones are not answered within so many rings during the day.
I also need to set up all the individual mail boxes.
Right now the client is still using a TELCO voicemail, but would like to start using this box once I can get it configured.
I did find an old folder with programming sheets in it that show it was originally installed by Executone way back when.
Thanks, Westley

You don't know what the voice mail is, yet you were able to default it? I find that hard to believe.
Be honest: You didn't connect to it via the serial port and accomplish this without having the proprietary software. There is a specific command to wake the system up for these commands, and that is proprietary to those who have the appropriate manual.
Tell us who you really are and what you are doing. We will assist you if you tell us the truth. This is not a restricted product, but we can't offer advice to just anyone who stumbles onto the scene.
Sorry if I offended you, but your post sounds like a loaded question. We have to protect the integrity of the product, it's manufacturer and this forum. Thank you for your understanding.

Ed,
I'm a computer tech first and a phone guy second.
I had the laptop connected via the serial port when I rebooted it and noticed that it was loading things via an AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
I just rebooted a second time, broke out of the AUTOEXEC and went snooping around the directories. I found the batch file that reinitialized the system to factory defaults, so I ran that.
Now I just need to figure out how to program the damn thing.
I did notice the phone system ahs a couple of serial ports on it, tried connecting to that, got no where and the manuals I did find for download mentioned some kind of special software to use. I was able to piece together enough from several sources to change the names on the phones, the date/time, and the ringing behavior.
Only thing left is the voice mail.
Worse case scenario, I'll just try to convince to move over to a Partner or Nortel system and toss this Vodavi up on eBay.
Thanks, Westley

OK, that makes a lot more sense. Sorry for the cold introduction, but we never know who is asking these questions.
To program the voice mail, ADMIN software will be required. It's a really, really simple GUI interface for all aspects of programming. It's pretty easy to locate and purchase, and it's inexpensive. You will need your settings to be 9600/N/8/1, but you probably already figured that part out.
As for the phone system, it too can be programmed via laptop using the serial connector on the processor card. In many cases, it's actually easier to use a phone connected to the first station port for programming. Again, you will probably want to consider obtaining the manual for this, which is also inexpensive.
There's a manuals button at the top of this page that has them and is reasonably priced. If you go to a Partner or Nortel, you will be taking two steps backward. The DVX system has much more to offer than either of them.
