Does anybody use a external modem to connect to these remotely?
If so what kind of modems are you using and is there anything that needs setup to make it work? I had a old 2400 Hayes modem that i through on and tested with but kept getting a timout error.

I know i can use the Ethernet port but it is gonna be a pain in the neck to get a VPN connection to this particular customer and it would be alot easier to just set up a modem off of one of the analog ports.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

One of my techs here told me that the only way to do this is with a USB modem. I have not confirmed this.

That is my understanding as well Ed. I never had any luck using a regular serial modem. The problem is that the VM serial port is connecting at 115.2K and your modem is connecting at 33.6K.

I'm going to try a USB modem on the Pathfinder IS soon and I'm confident that it will work. Just in case you missed it (like I did for quite some time) there are instructions for setting up a USB modem in the STSe Programming Manual. In the version I have in front of me, it is on page 572, which is D-54.

I just connected a Multilink USB to the Pathfinder IS and it works fine. Let me know about the Trendet.

The Inskin Pathfinder is very finicky about it's serial connection. There are only a handful of serial to USB converters that will work with it so be aware of that if you try to use a converter. I haven't tried any USB modems so I can't offer any comments on that. If you have v2.7b software on the Pathfinder you can use the ethernet port to do programming. That is probably the easiest way to do remote programming if the customer will give you access to their network. Have their IT guy point any connection with your IP address to the IP address of the VM card if they'll let you.

I hate to drag an old topic back out, but....

Larry i was wondering if you could give me any suggestions with the USB connection:

I hooked up a Trendnet USB modem. Installed like the manual says, committed all changes to the hard drive. Dial up the modem it answers I see the connection on the Monitor(Which I have connected to the STS InSkin HDD) under the DATA SERVER and it shows me coming in and shows it authenticating the password and then from my ISAdmin i get a timeout error.

Any help appreciated.

Why not use the internal xts modem? You loop a null modem cable from the serial port of the voice mail to the rs232 port on the phone sytem and enable the option in programming. The voice mail modem extension is 498.

There isn't much I can tell you. I downloaded the driver to the Pathfinder and committed the changes. Installed the modem and it worked.

Do you think it could be the the cheapy modem? I use MultiTech modems which will connect to most anything. You can get used ones on Ebay for dirt cheap.
