Recently we had a system failure which caused the entire phone system to revert back to default settings. I have everything back to normal except the MWI. When I press the button for the message waiting indicator it gives me the option of putting in my password and getting to my voicemail. However the light will not show up telling me that I have a message in my box. As of right now we are using the message notification in the voicemail but not everyone has a pager or a cell to send this to. The books/manuals that I am using give mention to this function but dont tell me how to do it. The voicemail system itself seemed to be unaffected.
I have tried just on the off chance that it would work resetting the voicemail to clear any settings saying it already sent an indication that the light should be on, as well I have tried to set up a new voicemail box that was not already in use beforehand and it does not work. There is a note showing a flex button programming code of 623 for Msg Wait, but when I put in everything up to the 62 im ok, as soon as I hit the 3 it gives me an error.
Any help with this would be appreciated.

The code for a VM button on your system is 440, not 623. You already have a fixed MSG button on the phone, that is why the system won't allow you to program one onto a flex button.
The message notification feature in the voice mail doesn't have anything to do with message waiting lights, so please stay away from that feature unless you truly need pager/cell phone notification. In trying to use this for message lights, your mailboxes will end up with dozens of "dead air" messages.
In order to help you with accuracy, we need to know what kind of voice mail system you have connected.

In addition to what voice mail it would be helpful to know if it's an analog or digital voice mail also.

It has to be an analog voice mail on the 2856 system. There was no digital integration with the SPD and DVX systems.

While watching the LED's on the voice mail unit itself, call into someone and leave a message. About 15 seconds after you hang up, watch the last LED to the right. If it starts flashing for about five seconds, then goes back to steady, we know that the Dispatch is sending the MWI signal string. At that point, I'd verify the last port connected to the Dispatch and make sure that dial tone is good to it.

I checked to make sure that the light is flashing, which it does. The dial tone is good to it.

Try dialing 420 + and extension number from the last port using a butt set or a single-line phone to see if the light comes on at that extension number. Then dial 421 + the extension number to see if it turns the MW light off. We need to know if the phone system or the voice mail is out of sync.
