I have an STSe system, in service about 3 years, and the customer reported that it has begun to reboot itself. They say it's happening at least once a week and sometimes several times a day. I stopped in yesterday, checked and backed up the program, and did a power-down reset three times to clear any garbage in the RAM. The customer called back this morning and said the system rebooted again yesterday after I left.
I scanned some posts here and it seems opinion is divided on the issue of the memory battery causing the problem. I assumed that, like most other systems I've worked on, if the battery was bad a power-down would default the program but that didn't happen. Is there any confirmation that the memory will hold even if the battery is soft but that some self-diagnostic is telling the system to reset (though the logic of that eludes me)? If the battery is just soft, is it possible (and safe) to meter the battery?
I'm heading over this morning to try Derrick's suggestion of reseating the cards, probably all of them just for S&G. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you look in etrace under the minor alarms to see if it is actually rebooting? It would show you in there if it was.
Also is the system on a battery back up (UPS)? It might be a power issue.

Yep, the system is on a UPS and I checked that it's holding up through short interruptions. I'll take a look at the logs. Thanks

If the data base is corrupt powering down and resetting won't fix it. You'll have to default and reprogram. I had this happen on one system and it's been over a year since I defaulted it and no further problems. The symptoms were as you've described.

Its a bad KSU. I've got one that still resets with about the same frequency. I swapped it out at the customer site with a used one and brought their KSU to my repair bench. I've replaced the battery and reinitialized. I stripped out everything including the CID board & SLIB-2. I replaced the Eproms and power supply. I have just one phone plugged into it and it still resets. I now use it for phone testing and as an emergency loaner (yea, I know). The S/N is dated Dec '04 so it is covered by the 5-year warranty that began Apr '04. I haven't sent it to Aztec repair because I am afraid it would go back to them a couple of times to get properly repaired and I am tired of that hassle.

The telephone gods must have shined on you Bill. Who knows? If Harry follows the above steps, he might squeak out of this one too!

OK.. here's the answer. I got on site and the customer told me the system had reset itself just before I got there and that it's pattern is to repeat that about 2-3 more times in the next half hour or so. Sure enough, in 5 minutes the system shut down and restarted... but so did the MOH device that's on the same UPS. But the building power never blinked.
After the system was back in service, I unplugged the UPS and everything held up just fine for about 3 minutes. So I plugged it back in, grabbed my DVM and monitored a free outlet on the UPS. In another ten minutes or so, the power sagged down below 20 volts and popped back up again... system reset and so did the MOH.
I stopped at that point and just replaced the UPS. I called before they closed this evening and no more resets so far. Hopefully, it hasn't been going on long enough to weaken the power supply in the STSe.
Anyway, guys, thanks for all the help.

It was a TrippLite... not one I installed. I usually put in APC.
