Iv'e been hearing alot about SIP lately and I am kind of wandering what the advatages and disadvantages are for SIP? What kind of call quality can I expect? is there anyway to adapt an older phone system such as my Vodavi DVX Plus II or III to utilize it? Will I see any substantial savings over PRI or FLEX type connections through a "traditional" phone company where most offer fairly large banks of free LD calling now? What are the scenarios where SIP will be most useful? Thanks in advance for you comments.

SIP trunks are phone lines that are delivered to you from a SIP provider over a broadband connection. These types of lines are very flexible, especially if you want to have a "presence" in a place where you do not have a physical location. Area codes and numbers can be provided and these can be programmed to ring into your phone system, pretty much anywhere. SIP trunks, at least from the provider we use can be fairly inexpensive and come with some LD minutes as part of the package. Lots more on them, but in a word you need a SIP enabled product or one that can be made SIP ready. The newest XTS release can be provisioned for SIP trunks as can lots of the pure IP PBX systems around today. The DVX systems that you have cannot be made SIP ready. If you need more, let me know.

Thank you Phoneguy10. I am looking into upgrading to an XTS system pretty soon. By the way, I have an IT consulting group offering me a 10Mbps, 7 X T1's Internet connection and SIP/voice delivered with LD included at $750 a month. Does that even sound possible? This for an office up in MI.

Thats a lot of bandwidth and a lot of $$. I dont know what your voice needs are but I will give you a jumping off point: Our carrier can give our clients a 10 SIP trunk package with 8,000 minutes of LD for app. $170/month. Not sure why you would need 7xT1 plus SIP? Is the T1 for your data needs only?

Yeah, It's a long story but the 10Mbps circuit will be serving both our Internet/VPN needs as well as our Voice. This is an Engineering office and they use alot of bandwidth for downloading/uploading CAD drawings. Thanks again.
