Hello.

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but do Cisco phones have a centeral phone system like a traditional system or does each phone act like its own computer connected to a network switch?

I have never seen a VOIP system before and normally work with standard phone system.

If it was built after 1980 don't expect it to work right.

The Cisco telephones connect to either a Cisco Integrated Services router (UC500/CM Express) or a Cisco communications server (Call Manager)...the telephones are clients on the telephony/data network if I am not mistaken.

It does not seem like the customer was too happy with these Cisco IP phones.

Bad installs make for a bad perception. Most people installing these have no business touching the voice side of Cisco. Generally a well installed Cisco with a customer that understands the limits, as well as the possibilities should work fine.

Absolutely, If you have a someone who knows what he or she is doing and a stable network then IP telephony is a good thing. You will hear a lot of people talking it down, but if the first two rules are followed then you should be fine.

Dont be afraid of what you don't know, take the opportunity to learn and understand.
