I have four phones, but have only installed two. All were working in the office before bringing them home. I will trade out various phones to see if it makes a difference. Two questions: how do you restore to default parameters? does having one phone line that has a number for voice and a separate number for fax make a difference?

The fact that you hear a loud buzz when trying to use the intercom feature leads me to think that the unit is bad, but swapping it out, or connecting a standard telephone, will be the acid test.
The 954 is an old model. I think it was one of the first AT&T branded NoKSUs to enter the market. If the unit is bad....toss it.
One thing to keep in mind is that the 954 will not work with any of the current crop of at&t branded NoKSUs.
