This old system as 10 phones. Extensions 10-17 work great but 18 and 19 do not. I moved the phones from 18 and 19 to other locations temporarily and they work fine. I looked at the wall jack and there is only 1 pair connected and it is the 2nd pair rather than the first. But this matches what I saw on the jacks that work. I don't know how long it has been since these have worked but the phones look fairly new. I toned out the 2 jacks and they are present on the 66 block and appear to wired appropriately. These pairs lead up to a card in the system labeled ESI-C(8). I thought the systme only supported 8 phones but I read in another post here that it does 16 phones if the ESI-C(8) card is in there. Is the card most likely faulty?

If the card is seated well and your on the right pairs coming off the front edge connector of the card and its still not working odds are you have a bad card. I would check every port on the card to be sure.

OK. I've checked every port on the card and nothing. I'm comparing the wiring/cabling to a schematic in an old manual left with the system and it looks a) like it matches the diagram and b) looks consistent in a pattern with the scheme on the main KTU extensions.
Can I assume that no programming of the system is required. The manual says that Ports are Mapped to Extensions by default 01 to 10, 02 to 11 etc. up through all the ports and extensions. I went into programming mode as indicated in the manual and as I advance through the port to extension assigments they look correct.
Any other programming that I should check?

Have you tried hooking up a temporary jack and tested it at the 66 block?
If the first 2 ports on that card don't work try the other 6.
The ETW series phones have to be terminated on the Blk/Yellow terminals on the Jack.
The DTU series phones are terminated on the Wht/Blue terminals.
If you have a Voltmeter you should be able to check the ports for 24-28V DC on those ports.

DJ,
Thanks for the advice on the Volmeter. I show 24-28V DC on all 8 ports on the card. I wired up a temporary check at the 66 block. If I disconnect the modular connector for phones 12/13 and instead plug in the modular connector to which I'm wired with my temporary jack, the phone works and appears as extension 12. If put 12/13 back and feed that temp jack with the modular connector connected to any of the 8 ports on the ESI-C(8) card the phone does not work. Since I have the voltage present on the card might I still be chasing a bad card or should I think in terms of some programming aspect?

In the paragraph above, I meant "temporary jack" not "temporary check". Sorry.

Might check for a split pair at the 66 block punchdown for the 25 pair coming from the E-pro.
Also I have seen some times these systems power share every 2 ports.
In otherwords a short in the wiring, jack, etc can cause the other paired phone to quit.
you could swap the connectors for 18-19 with 16-17 that is on the motherboard, and see if the problem follows the wiring.
There is nothing in programming that would cause this.

DJ,
1) Verified no split pair at the 66 block for the 25 pair coming fromt he E-Pro.
2) Swapping 18-19 with 16-17 makes the phones connected at 18-19 work and they show up as 16-17. 16-17 then do not work. So the problem still appears with the card (to me) despite the 24-28v DC being present on all 8 ports.
3) Further investigation shows that no one can tell me if the phones off 17-18 a) ever worked or b) when the ESI-(c) card was added or (c) if it was even added by the professionals who sold the original unit.
Would you continue to chase it or spend the money on a replacement ESI-(C) card.
If I powered off the system and removed the card and reseated it do I risk the system losing any configuration or does it automatically "know" that it has these extra 8 ports. Is there anything that can "reset" the system to think it does or doesn't have this extra card or is it just plug it in and it goes?

Unplugging the card after powerdown and then repowering it back up without the card should be OK.
The system will retain all programming rgardless if the card is in the slot or not. (Of course one hopes the lithium coin cell battery is good...)
You have not mentioned if you have phones on ports 19-25? If not just skip them and use the spare ports.
