Pardon my ignorance as an alarm tech. Phone vendor gave us permission to use some conductors of a 25 pair run. Why am I reading about 30 ohms resistance even when the pair is shorted on 1 end? I've tried it with more than 1 pair. We can't really use the wire with that much resistance. Thanks

You don't say how long this cable is, but if you're seeing 30 ohms on a short the actual resistance is 15 ohms on the pair. That would be about 300 feet of 24 gauge cable. Your alarm system should handle that just fine.

Yes, running your own wire keeps the data "noise" out of telephone cable and visa versa.

Less chance of errors happening and you having problems and telco having problems.

Good Luck.

The only reason I can think of why you would even begin to use a cable that is out of your control would be to extend dial tone on riser cable. Then again, I run my own RED cable.

Other than that, Fire Wire is RED for a reason. It let's all other trades know that the wiring is for life safety. You spray paint J-Box Covers, Hangers, Flex...et cetera RED for a reason. Why come to think if it...even the FACP's are also RED.

When someone is demolishing an area for a rebuilt you can be rest assured that most craftsman won't touch RED wire. They should know that in an active area that it could still be active.

AHJ in most, if not all, areas require Life Safety to have it's own seperate path.

The minute you intrude into another trade you open youself and your customer to multiple problems.

ALSO: What is the gauge of your Fire Wire as compared to the CAT 3 25 pr?
