We have an Electra Elite 192 with the VMS voice mail. I know about using CoSessions to archive and backup the current VMS setup, BUT...

We would like to replace the HDD on the card as it is older than we have been servicing it. The idea is to use Norton Ghost to clone the drive and migrate to a larger one, then mothball the original for emergency backup. However, I read elsewhere that NEC puts a secret serial number on the drive to prevent copying. Is this true? If cloning is possible, what is the largest capacity drive that can be used on a VMS card? Thx

Hmm. Ghosting a drive may work. Howver because the VMS uses DOS for it's OS the largest partition that you can use is 2Gig (fat) so a 40 Gig drive would be a waist.

i've heard it both ways. some say it will work others say it won't.

i'm with the it won't crowd. but hey it's worth a shot! i'd try to stay pretty close to the original size as possible. you are working with dos here and have to respect its limits.

I kinda suspected that about the 2 GB limit. I checked the drive, though, and it's 90% free space.

The problem that started it all was, callers into a mailbox would get cut off after a few seconds of recording. It turns out I forgot to do a second initialization after uploading a database via SAT.
