I have a customer with an Elektra Elite IPK and EliteMail VMS-8 U30. They are currently unhappy with their phone support, and as I have a considerable amount of experience programming Nortel BCMs, I was wondering if there's a good guide out there to introduce me to VM programming on the EliteMail system. Also, how does the onboard NIC work with the U30. I plugged in a crossover cable, sniffed my adapter, and I didn't see ANY traffic. I even tried setting jumper #3 to the ON position. Any help would be appreciated!

The Voicemail is basically an Active Voice Repartee OEM'd for NEC. You may have a VMP model that allows what Active Voice/ NEC calls Telanphony. It is a Unified messaging application to integrate with the Voice mail. It is a proprietary system and requires licenses for seats, etc.
The best way to program this Voice mail is with proprietary software known as cosssesions that allows you to interface via the rs-232 port on the card.
Unfortunatly you or the customer will need to contact another NEC dealer to purchase this.
The NEC systems, and the Voice mails are quite involved and takes a lot of training to fully understand.

no the vms has no telanphony. the elitemail cti does though. from all that i know the rj45 is dead.
like T&R said you WILL need cosessions in order to get to the meat of the programming.
and the programming is like nothing else that i've seen (unless it was made by active voice that is...even the stoopid lingo looks like it). you will most likely need a manual to understand it.

Guys, thanks for the input. I have to say that everything I've learned from Cisco to Nortel to Microsoft has come through experience. I understand that the terminology might be proprietary (I do have the Limited Technician's Guide that I found online), but the concepts of digital phone systems and voicemail are pretty universal from my experience across Nortel and Samsung DCS. Are there any guides that explain programming from the handset. I would imagine that EliteMail supports programming from the handset, however tedious, correct? By the way, CoSession looks like a generic terminal emulator to me. Is there something special or proprietary about this particular version? Can I just use HyperTerm with a null modem cable? I did some looking online and couldn't find out who manufactures it, at this point in time. I still don't understand why the thing doesn't use the RJ-45 port for Web management...

Let me also add that my current priority is as follows: I have a user at an extension (let's say it's 103) and when their extension rings, it goes to someone else's mailbox. This person was out on leave, so apparently the call forwards to the mailbox for a different extension. This is probably simple station programming, so maybe you can point me in the right direction for manuals/guides, or even just a brief list of steps. I'd still like to get a better understanding of the system as a whole, but I'd be happy to solve this immediate issue, as well. Thanks in advance...

Programming through the phone to the voice mail is limited to the managers box and you can add, delete and reset mailboxes, change main greetings and set the time and date of the V mail.
The real programming is done through a program called cosessions, it is a program that acts as a remote pc screen and keyboard to the voice mail.
The voice mail is a DOS program and it is made by Active Voice for NEC.
As to the problem of the set not going to the proper box, look at the call forwarding at that set. (dial 43 and look at the display to see if it is set to the voice mail pilot number, or forwarded to another set and that set is forwarded to VM.) or in the personal options of that voicemail box they may have set call transfer to a different number.

you WILL need cosessions. hyperterm will not work.
NONE of the elitemail stuff has any sort of web config to it. that includes the vms, vmp, fms, cms. as T&R said they are all based on dos (except for the cti which the last time i fooled with it was os2 (SHUDDER))

The RJ-45 plug on the face of the Elitemail VMS/VMP is for connection to another card called SPE ( single point of entry). This is used to set multiple com ports for access to SMDR, Elitemail, SAT & remote programming, ect.

The EliteMail VMS has OS/2 in the background, though you will never see it. The software CoSession for Windows is made by INSYNC. It is pretty much like PCAnywhere, except the host is running in the background on the VMS, so you have to use CoSession. Once you get a copy of this, your next hurdle is the system password.
The RJ-45 on the VMP card was for future upgrades and/or factory testing (jtag/flashing/etc). The SPE card (kick ass little invention) would connect to it via DB9. I love that thing, you could use it for other serial devices besides the phone system. I'm using one to let me hyperterm into a video server for file transfers. You can connect to any DB serial port.
In my opinion, the ActiveVoice products are a cakewalk compared to some other voicemails, and you could probably turn on the garbage disposal with it...seriously.
I know this thread is three years old, but it could be useful to someone else. In agreement with what chrislebeck said, if you are faced with a Lingo, do the tech world, your customer, and yourself a favor and drop it from the roof. Biggest piece of shit EVER (next to the Atlas phone system). Even Bizfon was better.
By the way, I successfully repaired a CTI with a used hard drive from a laptop. With any of your hdd based voice mails, use Acronis or some other clone program and sector copy that bad boy. When you have a copy, you can restore all those broken cards to a resellable condition. I bet you could've used that info five years ago, LOL.
