Hi Guys,

I have a NEC DS1000..past the 2 year warranty of course..and it will just completely lose power anywhere from 5 seconds to 30 seconds..and since the power goes down, i lose the call.

Does anyone know:

1. Why this occurs
2. Are there any settings to prevent this
3. If not any settings, what can I do to fix this??

Thanks in advance,

Mike

HI, Mike welcome to the board.

My first question is .... is the system on a dedicated electrical outlet? Anything else on the outlet "dying"?

"Dying" as in all the lights and displays goes away as well as the call?

Is the system on an UPS? Are you on copper lines or some other type of service?

Did this just start? How often does it do it? Any recent adds or equipment changes?

Gee, I have a lot of questions but no answers. I'm just trying to set a base line. Is it inside or outside your system by asking these questions.

The smart guys will be checking in later and may have a quicker answer.

I am not a NEC dealer, but this sounds to be a fairly common problem with many systems. There are a few things you might want to look into:

Excessive heat: If the room or area where the KSU is located is particulary warm, especially if the unit is mounted high on the wall, the power supply could be cutting out until it cools down. Try removing the system's cover to improve ventilation and see if that has any effect.

Battery backup / UPS: These units are notorious for failing after only a few years. If it's an on-line UPS and the batteries are weak, this type of occurrence is very common. If there is a UPS, try disconnecting the phone system from it and plug directly into the wall outlet.

Hopefully, one of these will solve your problem. At least they will help you in tracking the problem down.

If you are using a UPS, make sure you don't have a laser printer plugged into it.

Does it come back by itself, or do you have to cycle the power before it comes back up?

Does the display go blank or do you see system start in the display?

What software version? With handset in cradle press 8 on the key pad.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all your replies. I will tell you what I know.

First. The NEC DS1000 is plugged into a surge protector, mounted on the wall within a small utility closet. There are only two plugs going into the surge protector. One plug is from the DS1000 system and the other is for the DSL modem, also within the utility closet.

When it dies, all the lights on the display go out, followed by a “system startup in progress”. It used to happen about once a month but now it happens about 3 times a week.

Its hard to say whether or not the dsl modem loses power as well so I will try to keep an eye out for that next time it occurs.

But based on the system startup in progress I am leaning towards it being just the system iself restarted and not the power outlet.

I’m not sure what you mean by copper lines. I just know that its on a surge protector mounted to the wall. Apparently it has been occurring ever since it was purchased some since May 2004. There are no recent additions or equipment changes.

It is not on a UPS system. That is the only electrical system within the utility closet

Do you have any idea how hot it has to get for it to restart like that?

As to the phone software version, I hit #8 and it says the software version is 03.03.00

Also, since this system keeps doing this, are you aware of any phone systems compatible with these NEC phones that we can use to replace it?

Or, what is a better phone system that lasts longer than 2 years without these power down issues, for less than $1000?

Included with the DS1000 are the 3 phone digital KSU with caller id,(80573) 22 button display hand units.

Like most other digital systems, the NEC DS series phones are made to be compatible only with The NEC DS 1000 and 2000 or the newer DSX series. These are both available to purchase new; however, I wouldn't jump to doing that quite yet. NEC phone systems are reliable and have an average lifespan of well over 2 years.

Your first course of action is to upgrade your system. The current release is 3.22.00.

Otherwise, this certainly sounds like either a hardware or external interference issue. Listen to the advice these guys have for you, and/or have your system checked out by an NEC technician before you throw in the towel.

Good luck, and wait for the others to chime back in. The post was stagnant for awhile.
