I have a Series 700 Electra Pro 120 LVL2 with over 30 ETW-16DC phones. Some of our phone will not allow the user's speaker to work. The problem is this...

Jane presses her SPKR button on the telephone and dials John's extension. John cannot hear Jane because her microphone isn't working. Jane picks up the reciever and now John can hear Jane speaking.

The FNC 1 to enable the microphone doesn't fix this problem. Also, replacing the ETW-16DC phone with a known good microphone doesn't fix the problem either.

Is this a sign the phone system is starting to go out or what?

No the system is just fine. Sounds like HFU (handsfree) isn't turned on. Program 4-29 needs to be set to yes for that port.

Thanks, Scott. How do I set yes to that port? Is with some special software or accessible through the system maintenance menu? Maybe a setting on the phone itself?

You can program this through the phone, setting is a system program parameter.

I searched through all the little manuals that came with our phones, but I cannot seem to find the command to turn off the Hands Off setting. Any ideas?

I doubt that the user guides you have are going to solve your problem. You need to get into programming to change the setting to allow for handsfree. This will require you to enter technician level programming. If you are unsure of how to do this, call a certified tech in you area to help, since this is an area you can really mess things up if you don't know where to go.

P.S. how far are you from Little Rock or Jonesboro if you need a tech.

The speakers stopped working 'out of the blue'. No one has changed any of the system settings, programmatically or systematically. Maybe the phone system is just starting to crash.

Yes, sir. I tried it lit and unlit just because frustration pushed me to the 'realm of no explanation'.

then you need to go to one of the phones that are connected to ports 1 or 2, and get into system programming. After that, go to memory block 4-29 for all ports and make sure HFU is set to yes.

Scott.
