We are a small business that has inherited a NEC 120 phone system. The manual that came with the system does not explain how to change the voice mail message that is on the system. Could anybody enlighten me as to how to remove this message and maybe give me some tips on how to adapt this system to suit our company as we are just using it at the moment to answer the phone and non of the other features it seems to have. Thanks . Steve

Check the Front Desk Voice Mail Box Logon to that Box it Should Give you the Option to enter System Manager Programing. One of the Options will be to Change the Greeting for "Opening Box".

If I'm not mistaken, the XN120 is the cousin of the Aspire system. One of the phones in the office should be designated as the voice mail's "System Administrator"..... typically this is the receptionist's phone or the office manager's phone.
Go to either of these phones, determine if there is a "MSG" button. Pressing the MSG button will get you into that phone's personal voice mail box. Then dial 72 for system admin. If it is the administrator's phone, you will be prompted with "welcome to the system administrator menu....."
The general greeting you wish to change is referred to as an "Instruction Menu". Press "I" or the corresponding button beneath the display for "INST". You will then be prompted for a box number.
Depending on the voice mail type installed in your system the intruction box number could be 001, 801, 810, 811, etc. You will have to play with various entries until you hear something like, "to record an instruction menu press R"...
If the numeric entry is invalid it will tell you so.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys but yes the I know which phone is the main phone in the office but it does not have a msg button and I can not access an Instruction Menu. There are two banks of numbers (not dialing numbers)both go from 1 to 12. If I press the No 1 on the second bank of numbers then the message says "there are no messages please enter the required service code" I have tried entering each of the 801, 810, 811 and nothing happens. Any more ideas?

There should be a "pilot" number for the voice mail ports. Here, we generally set up 700 as the pilot for each voice mail port extension (program 11-07-01 if you know how to access programming).
Try going off-hook to intercom dial tone, dial 700. If it is the pilot for the vm, it should return with the prompt.."please enter the mailbox number". You should enter whichever extension might be the system administrator (e.g., 301, 302..?). Then dial the 72 for system admin functions.

If you have a voice mail message, what do you press to check it?
Starting with the receptionist's phone, press "that" button. Then dial 72. If this phone has system admin capabilities, you will hear, "welcome to the system administration menu.... for instruction menu, press 'I'..."
If you do not hear that greeting, move on to another phone and repeat the process. Somewhere in your office is the system admin phone.
Once you find it and hear the system admin welcome greeting, press 'I' then start experimenting with box numbers....811, 812, 813, etc.

I just did a Google search for NEC XN120 voice mail, and found that 884 is the pilot to access voicemail, then enter mail box number plus #.
I could not find the system administrator's guide for instructions on changing greetings, but looking at the voice mail depicted in pictures, it looks like the DSX IntrMail. The DSX instruction menus are numbered 801, 802, 803, etc.
