I just loaded a new, larger HDD for my laptop with all of the goodies I could want...

Now the os just stops after I login and gives me this message.

I have checked the win/sys32 directory, and the file is there, but the os doesn't see it when trying to load.

Thoughts?

Its not alway the case that .dll files are authentic. Search the web and download the file and replace it.

What os and service pack are you running?

It's sp2.

I tried to delete and copy a good .dll file from my other xpprosp2 machine and was not allowed.

"cyclic redundancy check"

Then I tried to repair the install using the original cd.

bad idea.

Looks like I'm back to square one

This file was known for a frequent exploit for certain viruses. More than likely thats what happened.

You might consider loading the good copy from another installed box onto a floppy and booting from an XP disk and using the repair option and going in through the command prompt to replace it, that won't have the file in use or anything, might work for you.

I just dumped the whole install and started over after formatting 7x.

Thanks for the replies, I'll get better virus protection this time around.
