Hi.
Can anyone let me know the difference between AMD Opteron vs AMD 64 X2 processors ?
If you are comparing specs between 2 dual core processors which both have 2.8Ghz,is there really much of a difference.
I know that Opteron cost a lot more and are suppose to be for servers but is this just a lot of marketing hype or is there some real differences?
For example, if faced with a choice between Opteron 250 which is 2.4ghz vs AMD 64 X2(which is also 2.4ghz). Is there much of a difference?
Thanks.

I personally prefer intel products.
The last domain server we installed was an AMD 64. We ended up having several programs that would not function on it due to the fact that the 32 bit integration was not supporting the program. We had to setup the Login security script builder on a desktop to modify it and then upload it to the server.
I would probably have to advise the Opteron. Also look into the Intel QUAD series. Works very well for servers.

At first glance the biggest differnce is the L2 cache.

I know that sometimes there can be problems when creating a backup server with a different operating system or CPU(Intel vs AMD)
I personally have found better success with Intel however my I.T department already started down a path of AMD servers recently.
I guess I am confused on what exactly make the Opteron so special from the standard AMD chip besides the fact that it cost twice as much.
Sometimes products made for corporation cost more because they figure they have deep pockets.
So I was just wondering if there was really anything which made the Opteron cost more to produce than the standard AMD CPU or anything which allowed it to process twice as far as the standard AMD Chip.
Thanks

This was on the SAT's last semester:
Opteron is to x64, as Xeon is to Pentium....

Unless your building a server, you don't need the Opteron, and even then, I don't think I would go that route. Some of the special server motherboards need the "lower profile" type chips and heatsinks.

Do you think the regular AMD chip would be pretty much the same thing for a lot less money? Is the opteron just a marketing ploy by AMD to get business to pay out the big dollars for something that is basically the same as the base AMD chip with only minor insignificant differences? Please let me know your take on this? Thanks.
