I've had about 30 computers come in over the past two days with this same issue. Some could be fixed, others needed a complete format.

This opens door for many other trojan's which makes it a PITA to remove.

The other issue, is not every installation names files the same or places them in the same area of the registry.

Use this from the run line to temporarily re enable registry editing:

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

I've had some success by updating my spyware removal software (Spy Bot and AdAware), then booting to safe mode and running each in succession.

Sounds like the old Spyaxe from awhile ago. If so goto safe mode and find the svchosts.dll file, not the svchost.dll but the svchosts.dll and remove it.

Can you run "Hijack this" and get to the point where you can delete the registry issue?

if you still have access to the internet use trendmicro's housecall. housecall.trendmicro.com It cleans 95 % of the nasties you might have picked up.
another FREE tool is avg antivirus (new version released the end of last month, it will detect and remove both spys and virus'.

If you get a real nasty one you should install AVG / update to the latest definitions / reboot in safe mode / then scan.

IMPORTIANT INFO:
before you run/remove viruses download a program called LSPFix.... google it...
If you get a bad infection the removal can cause your IP stack to break, LSPFix can recover and save you a reinstall of the OS....

Some of these are from nasty root kits = very well hidden.
F-Secure made a good root kit remover, BlackLight I believe. Nice to have one of those on hand.
