Five weeks until D-Day: Windows XP\'s Demise According to Microsoft, June 30 is the last day it will permit retailers and OEMs to sell the nearly-seven-year-old operating system.

Yup. That's why I was in a hurry to buy a new laptop.

Yes, OEM's will not be able to ship anything but Vista after next month, but licenses for Windows XP Professional will still be sold until January of 2009 with talks of extending it further due to the onslaught of the new ultraportables running versions of Linux (such as the Asus EEE PC and Intel's Classmate PC and other super small form factor laptop style units). Micro$oft doesn't like the competition in this field and may be considering extending XP's licensing or losing a small handful of customers to Linux. Only time will tell.

Actually, per the article, Dell will downgrade a Vista Pro or Ultimate box to XP Pro at the factory free of charge. Of course one could always purchase XP home.
