I'm in the process of trying to rebuild my son's PC that got completely taken over by viruses. I've pretty much started over and have made decent progress except for some missing drivers. The OEM disk isn't working, so I've tried Googling several free sites, but they either tell me I have plenty of problems with no button to run the fix or the free sites really aren't free.
I don't need the audio component, and I've already installed a separate NIC in a vacant slot. For this reason, I really don't want to spend any more money on this thing if there truly is a free fix unless there really isn't one. Any ideas?

What is the make and model of the PC? You shouldnt ever have to pay for drivers. Ive been working on computers for 10 years and have yet to pay a cent for a driver. Just about all drivers can be found from the OEM and if that fails then the component manufacturer will normally have a reference set of drivers for whatever componenet you need them for. I dont trust the "driver" sites and would never install any of those drivers on any computer I work on. If you cant find them send me the make, model, and service tag if its a dell, and serial number and I will find them for you.

If its not a dell, crack the case and find the motherboard model number. Ping.com it and see what you find.
If dell, go straight to their site and you should find everything you need.

It is a Dell, and after about 15 minutes on their site, I was able to locate and download all of the necessary drivers. Not only was I able to restore on-board audio components, but I'm now able to use the on-board NIC. While I was there, I found that the video driver was incorrect, causing other problems I've been having.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Sometimes the best fix is the least obvious. The Dell service tag is right on the front of the thing!

In my experience the best way to get drivers for PCs and components is to open the box up and read the exact part# from the motherboard, google it, and you should get all the drivers that came with the motherboard from the manufacturer web site. NIC cards, and graphics cards can be done the same way.

Thats why I like Dell so much. I never have to worry about updating drivers if I rebuild a machine. They really stay on top of things.

Not only that, but you can find the shipped configuration of any system they ever made using the service tag. If you have to manage bunches of dell systems, go through https://premiersupport.dell.com/ and sign up for an account. When you can enter the service tags for the systems, dell will email you if an official updated driver comes out. The one thing you want to be very careful with is using the Microsoft Update Driver updates. They don't always work well with systems like notebooks which may have been customized a bit more by the OEM. I should say that the other computer sites are easy to get drivers from, but not as easy as dell. Gateway you need the Serial number, or if it is a part, search on their site for the 7 digit part number. IBM used to use the type-model number nnnn-aaa paired with the serial number. Acer and HP/Compaq tend to be more esoteric. Getting support for business class systems is easier than consumer junk.
