If you're looking for a free legitimate registry cleaner, try CCleaner from filehippo.com or download.com. I run the CCleaner registry cleaner all the time and have never had a problem. Ccleaner also has an easy-to-use startup configurator to stop all those unneeded programs from starting. CCleaner also has an add/remove program that works about the same as Windows Add/Remove but opens up almost instantly.
The same company, Piriform, also offers a free disk defragmenter called Defraggler. Defragmenting can really speed things up if you haven't done it in a while.

CCleaner did the trick. There were 154 "issues" that were fixed and now this thing works great. The difference is amazing now. Thanks, Butch. Oh, and Thanks to everyone else for the suggestions.

Wow, that's great, I'm glad to hear that worked for you Ed. I may have to try that myself later today!

I'm glad CCleaner worked for you. Windows has a built-in disk defragmenter that you can run manually. Just go to Start-Run and type in "defrag c:". For a while all you will see is a blinking underline. So be patient.
I noticed that Vista sets its defragmenter to run every Wednesday at 1 a.m. by default. So if your Vista computer is turned on 24x7, it is probably defragmented.
I just mention this for all you speed demons because defragmenting can really speed up your computer if it hasn't been defragmented for a few months or years.

I defrag often, but have never used this CCleaner (will be DL it here shortly and running overnight), does it do the same as a defrag or is it a registry only cleaner?

Tony, it only took about 20 minutes for me to clean out all of the unused files AND to fix the registry. Much of that time was my having chosen to view each of the 154 items before I OK'd the fix.
There are all kinds of utilities available there if you want to run them.

Wow, that worked nicely, thanks for the suggestion!
I ran it and my AVG/MalwareBytes/SpybotS&D overnight.
Cleared out the 200 some files it wanted to and re-booted this morning. Opening and closing programs was much more responsive, as was general operation.
A+ in my book :thumb:

Looks like you have it covered, however I wanted to add that I always use https://www.revouninstaller.com/ to unistall unwanted programs. It will scan on a deeper level to make sure all the files are removed. Works great! I run these once or twice a month: 1. CCleaner 2. Malwarebytes Anti-Maleware 3. A Full Virus Scan I run these once every three months: 1. Disk Clean Up 2. Disk Defragmenter
