My wonderful carrier has decided they really don't want to extend my new DS3 to my suite. They are dropping the DS3 off on BNC connections to me. The distance to my suite is about 425 ft, so I think I can get away with a 734A cable. What I'm looking for are some suggested media converters to use on both ends. Any thoughts? Or was I told wrong and they connect directly to the DS3?

I'm also going to have my vendor quote me a fiber extension as well, but I've seen high prices on the BNC to fiber media converters. Any thoughts on those?

Thanks
Ron

No need for media converters if you are going to run the 734 coax. Terminate the coax on both ends with BNC connectors and hook them up to the dsx-3 that the telco will provide you for a hand-off. Hook the other end up to whatever type of cpe that you are using and you should be all set.

734 coax should be good for at least 450' (I have seen some manufacturers claim 600').

What whynot said. You should have no problems. My personal feeling is: always test. Install the wiring - and then test it. If you have any problems with your circuit you'll be ahead of the finger pointing.

Thanks guys. I thought something was funny about wanting to use a BNC to BNC media converter.

"My wonderful carrier has decided they really don't want to extend my new DS3 to my suite".

You haven't provided enough info in your post to justify the carrier bashing. Since this is a DS3, it's unlikely that you were not advised up front about the telco dmarc location by outside plant engineering or the digital field work group. Again, you haven't provided enough info about the optical build/circuit design.

The 734a should be just fine for that extension, but you will not be able to BERT test the extension with a test set at one end and a hard loop at the other because you would actually be testing 850ft of coax. You will have to either test with the LEC or monitor the port pm data on you terminating equipment after it is in-service

In my experience, any down time or transmission errors on an In-Service DS3 without a backup is a major problem. I personally would not extend the circuit that far on coax. I would pull a fiber drop and use an O3/D3 mini-mux or converter.

The cable length was wheeled out yesterday and with verticals and any kind of service loop, it's just shy of 500'.

ILECTECH, I'm leaning more in the fiber direction. Do you have any media converters that you would recommend?

BTW, it's only carrier bashing if you take it as a sarcastic remark. wink I really may think they are wonderful otherwise...

If your still looking for a DS3-Fiber/Fiber-DS3 Converter, the place I'm at has had 3 DS3's up and going since April with absolutely no issues. Dual PSU's on the chassis aswell. Expandable modular chassis.
