Are you trying to just get online so you can get out to the Internet, or are you trying to access other computers etc. on the network? A few items may be an issue such as if you're on a Domain etc. but for the most part from what you've said, I'll assume you're just on a peer network for now and you're just trying to get out to the Internet.

Go to Start>MyComputer>MyNetworkPlaces>ViewNetworkConnections and look at the icon for Local Area Connection. The computer screens in the icons should be blue. If they're grey then right click on the icon and select "enable." Otherwise right click on the icon and select Properties.

From there click on the Advanced Tab and uncheck all the boxes on that tab for now. Go back to the General Tab and in the window scroll down and highlight TCP/IP. Then click Properties. Make sure IP and DNS are set to obtain automatically.

Say OK and then at the bottom of the page that is still remaining up, check the box to "Show Icon in notification area when connected."

After all that is done, make sure you're plugged into the network with a standard patch cable, and doubleclick the little computer screens in the systray (bottom right hand corner of your computer screen.) When the page comes up, click on the Support Tab and then the Details button. Post back and tell us what you see in that screen.

Sorry If you mentioned this, but you can also setup two different hard-wired connections in Xp that will auto-detect your network and connection. Such as Office1.network and Home1.network.

hi guys

Id like to reopen this thread if you dont mind and if im hijacking or should open a new thread just let me know.

I recently got a new laptop and would like to setup a simple network with my other computer at home. On the preexisting comp i am running linux ubuntu 6.06 and on the laptop is xp home (waiting for a copy of pro). Now as i understand there are certain hoops i must jump through before i can network the two together, correct? I installed samba on the linux box as i believe it is what i need to network the two but now im lost. Whats next?

I currently work in the telcom biz as a cabler and installer and would love to get into the IT side of the industry as i feel the overwhelming surge pushing us all in that direction and as of yet everything ive learned is self taught. Well i cant say self taught because its from folks like you from which i learn but you know what i mean. I admit that im getting a little restless with the countless hours i spend online looking for resources because i feel like i should look it up myself rather than waste your time but, like i said, im getting restless.

I have bookmarked a great free online tcp/ip guide and am reading it diligently but i could use a little friendly direction.

Thanks guys. help

Always best to open a new thread particularly on a post almost 4 months closed. You will get more attention and possibly the help you are asking for.
