I'm trying to talk our in house IT guy into allowing me to be able access my work email at home. I want ot be able to semi intelligently discuss this with him. What would this connection be called in networking terms.
a VPN?
an Intranet?

I wouldn't try to remember a bunch of terms which don't mean anything to you. Just explain it in plain english  Tell him that you'd like to access email from offsite and go from there. It may be a simple matter of setting up a webmail account that you can access from any browser or it may involve setting up a VPN connection or even an RDP session.

I agree. You probably already have some type of web mail feature with your company email. If your company runs exchange server it will be even easier.
