Last, is there a number you can dial where you can input a toll free number and it tell you what carrier provides that number?
It's called a RESPORG (RESPonsible ORGanization) number. You input the toll free number, and it will tell you which carrier handles it, and what their contact number is.

Here's a hint - I can call our regular AT&T trouble reporting number, and instead of putting in my local area code and telephone number like if I wanted to report my own telephone line being dead, I can put in 800 and a 7 digit telephone number, and be told who handles it and what number to call to reach them.

EV607797, you're correct. I was looking for a way to identify the carrier of a particular toll free number.
Touch Tone Tommy, thanks for the hint. I will try that next time.
The trouble has not returned so I suspect Verizon has fixed the issue or still has the trunk(s) busied out. My guess is the latter...
I started w/Ma Ball in '79 and have known the 700-555-4141 and other nos from wayyyy longer than I care to remember. Sorry if I didn't explain it better.
Thanks to all, great forum here...one of the forums I can read at work w/o getting into "internet trouble" LOL!!
