Hi All,

I am trying to a resource to conduct passive telephone line testing via an API. Meaning we want to programmatically test to see if phone numbers in our database are good by passively testing the actual telephone line. We've seen this offered as a pay service, but would like to develop our own but are unsure of where to start. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

You mean you want to robocall all the numbers in your database to see what picks up? I suppose you can weed out the ones where the carrier provides SIT tones to indicate they are not in service and maybe fax lines but there is no way otherwise to separate voice mail and other recorded messages from a real person cursing at you.

When I ran big networks we used to have a system called a ROTL (remote office test line). It would automatically test all trunks on the switch. When you had 2,000 trunks on a switch it was almost impossible (or too labor intensive) to test them manually, but the ROTL took care of it.

For lines, there were "war-board" programs that would dial every number in a range and check for modems! But otherwise I'm unaware of other programs.
