I've only seen 900 ohm used occasionally on trunk lines. Otherwise, 600 is the norm. As far as the Db loss goes, I'm afraid I've forgotten that stuff now that most COs have let subscriber trunks fall by the wayside.

Huh? Distance from the C.O. tends to determine the impedance. As far as loss...they strive for -3 to -6.5. It's not corrected until it goes lower than that and only very rarely. Most modern phone systems can compensate for long loop by removing the 3 dB pad. From a normal C.O. or RSU, the nominal impedance is 600 ohms.

Stan
o.paulsen@sbcglobal.net Dave and Carl, how in the heck did you even understand enough of this (question?) to even respond? I still don't understand the OP's intent.

Dunno, we must be answering his questions because he keeps coming back.

My answer of 600 ohms would be based solely on the thread title. When given a choice between 600 and 900 ohms in the US, I choose 600. Like the last one, the body of the post is quite the tongue twister, especially when spoken out loud.

It also helps that I spent about 5 years in COEI doing special services by hand. Geeze, somewhere I still have my cable training notes. I just stripped out the special services hardware from the warehouse...obsolete 401, 451, 457 and 443 Wescom and Tellabs equipment. I figured that they had very little value :-)
It broke my heart tossing out the firebar.
